EVERY CHORE had greater significance that morning. Molly trotted along behind Caleb and watched as he took extra care stacking bales of hay as if it mattered that they were neatly aligned against the wall of the stable.

“What’re you looking at?” he asked when he saw Molly tilt her head at him. She yipped and bounded over to bump against his legs. He gave her a solid pat on her wriggling rump that only made her wag her tail harder. Caleb watched her joy and laughed. “He’s only coming to see Ruth and the little one.” Molly’s grin widened. “And you too, you dumb dog.” One more pat, and they went out into the spring sunshine.

The breeze carried a hint of warmth along with the scents of the new season and the prospect of change. He leaned on the rail of the top paddock and watched the big mare gently push her foal out of the way to get to a clump of new grass. The filly moved but stomped her tiny hoof before cantering to the far end of the paddock.

“Stop showing off,” he called to her, which earned him a couple of buckjumps before she returned to the safety of her mother. “We’re gonna have to come up with a name for you soon and get your registration papers in.” Even though his nieces had come up with a variety of names, some suitable, most not, he knew the real reason he hadn’t chosen one yet. She’d have her name tomorrow.

He cleared his throat, suddenly embarrassed by his involuntary smile at the thought of Paul’s visit. “Molly,” he said abruptly. “Let’s get moving. We have to get this place straightened up.”
